A narrow front looks wider when the eye is made to travel sideways. 3. Wave Balcony Stack with a Fin Crown: When You Have More Than 30 Feet

This one is included deliberately as the counter-example, because it is the design most homeowners send us as a reference and the one that genuinely needs more frontage than 30 feet. Each floor cantilevers as a curved balcony slab with a dark timber soffit, the edges stack in a wave, and a vertical fin screen sweeps across the upper floors as a crown.
It works because there is enough width for the curve to complete itself. Compress the same idea into 30 feet and the wave becomes a wobble — the radius is too tight to read as intentional, and the cantilever depth needed to make the shadow line work starts eating the setback. The rounded corners matter more than they look. On a tight street you almost never see a narrow facade straight on; you approach it at an angle. Square balcony corners read as a hard edge from that oblique view, while the curve keeps the form reading as one continuous volume from every approach. 5. The Scalloped Shingle Skin: Pattern Doing the Whole Job

Sometimes the answer to a narrow front is to stop composing it altogether. Here a single scalloped metal shingle — overlapping semicircular tiles, like fish scale — runs across the entire elevation, over solid wall and over openings alike, and the building becomes one continuous textured surface.
This is the most forgiving option when the underlying structure is awkward. Five Mistakes That Ruin a 30 Feet Front Elevation
These are the five we are most often asked to fix on houses that are already built.
- Too many ideas across nine metres. Stone on the left, texture on the right, an arch in the middle, and a different railing on every floor. Pick one language and repeat it.
- A flat facade with no depth. Pattern printed or pasted onto a flat plane has no shadow, and without shadow it looks like a rendering rather than a building. Depth of 150–250 mm is what makes a facade read as real.
- Ignoring the stilt. The bottom third of a narrow front is parking. Leave the soffit as bare concrete and a dark hole sits under an expensive elevation. Treat the gate, soffit and lighting as part of the design.
